In reference to this conversation: http://is-fear-itself.livejournal.com/2024.html?thread=88296#t88296

First, Mohinder has a degree in parapsychology, not psychology (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohinder_Suresh)

Second, while psychology is a complicated subject, and it is difficult for anyone (even psychologists) to understand the ins and outs completely, confusing the works of Piaget with the works of Freud is something that someone with a firm background in psychology (even a parapsychologist) wouldn't do.

Hi! Thanks for the crit!

Canon sources have said that Mohinder has a degree in philosophy, psychology and molecular biology (genetics). They usually say he got them from Oxford but every once in a while during an interview Sendhil Ramamurthy messes up and says Cambridge because he's a silly.

A degree in parapsychology would be a degree in psychology. Parapsychology is nothing more than the name for the more or less accepted (sometimes more and sometimes less, the same as say, cryptozoology) branch of psychology concerned specifically with quote-unquote paranormal phenomena.

He, rather, I, in what I've researched for the character and generally know from taking a handful of psych and philosophy classes, was just generalistically suggesting that it was strange to immediately link a behavior back to a relationship with a family member, as Freud frequently does. He wasn't exactly citing anything in specific, just making a silly barb in the sense that someone would have said 'Baconian' or 'Descartian.' He's a wry character and tends toward making barbs rather than actually dealing with things, e.g. his relationship with Peter Petrelli.

I hope this explains your questions!

How can Mohinder teach psychology at Poly's school when he is a parapsychologist? The two fields are not even distant cousins, so it seems very OOC.

Mohinder is a geneticist, actually. His most recent teaching work has all been in genetics, although he's following that course more because of his father. He has a doctorate in philosophy (what actually gives him the Dr. in his name), but he also has a masters in molecular biology and either a masters or a bachelors in psychology, where he did the majority of his research in the field of parapsychology. All of his original research is in psychology (dreams) and in epidemiology.

He loves psychology, and would love to teach it to people if given the chance. He has a passion for knowledge in general, and that's something that drives his character.

Although, all that aside, it should be noted that you don't need a degree in the specific subject to teach that subject even an actual university, and the school setup as mod-specified to us by the mods is volunteer-run.

I hope that helps clarify things for you! ♥

Also! In case you're wondering from where I'm gleaning the background information about Dr. Suresh, the majority of this kind of 'character origin' material for the character isn't available in the main Heroes series but is littered through Heroes: Evolutions (an Alternate Reality Game that runs along with the series) material, such as Dr. Suresh's website and journal, and etc.
